I looked him up http://www.geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/thelakes/html/otley/otley07.htm I'm impressed that he corresponded with John Dalton and Adam Sedgwick who were world class scientists. I like the idea that he cut a notch on Friars Crag to allow measurements of the level of Derwent Water to be measured,. He sounds like the sort of amateur scientist I'd like to be.
